Skydiving during winter may not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about adventuring in the winter time, but it is an experience like no other! With crisp air, breathtaking views of Missouri’s winter landscapes, and fewer crowds hanging at the dropzone, winter skydiving is truly unique.
Is skydiving cold? Even in the warmer months, skydiving brings a certain level of chill. Not only are you experiencing 120 mph winds rushing all around you, but the temperatures also tend to be cooler up at altitude. So how does one prepare for skydiving in colder conditions? Read on for an overview of skydiving in the cold and some few helpful tips for those bold enough to take on the winter chill.
Can You Skydive in Cold Weather?
Yes, you can absolutely skydive in cold weather! As long as weather conditions aren’t harmful with the right preparation, skydiving in the cold can be an exhilarating adventure. Modern skydiving gear is designed to perform well in a wide range of temperatures, and the team at Skydive STL takes extra precautions to ensure that every jump is as comfortable and as safe as possible.
While Skydive STL’s season officially begins at the end of March, early spring weather can still be pretty chilly, so the tips below are especially helpful for those first few weeks of operation.
The Benefits of Skydiving During Winter
Many skydivers find that the serene beauty of Missouri’s late winter and early spring landscapes – coupled with the take-your-breath-away awe of freefall – far outweigh any temporary chill. Plus, winter skydiving offers unique advantages like crystal clear skies, less crowded dropzones, and more one-on-one time with your new bestie (your tandem skydiving instructor).
If you choose to go skydiving in the winter, you’ll get to witness the rare sight of a mellow skydiving hangar – giving you a chance to really take in the moment without the hustle and bustle of a dropzone in the high season. This can make your skydiving experience feel even more relaxed and personal.
Thrill-seekers looking for more of a challenge find a greater sense of accomplishment in conquering the elements by completing a skydive in colder conditions.
Winter Skydiving Safety Considerations
Safety is always the number one priority at Skydive STL. Our team regularly conducts frequent weather checks to assess conditions. We ensure that the equipment and gear needed to jump in colder climates is all well-maintained and optimized. That goes for the parachute rig itself, jumpsuits, gloves, goggles, and any other necessary cold-gear.
Top Tips for Skydiving in Winter
While we aren’t open during the thick of winter, we’re definitely off to the races as soon as temps start trending upwards. Whatever the season, knowing how to dress, what to expect, and how to prepare is key.
1. Dress for the Weather
We’ve found all kinds of ways to stay comfortable while jumping. Because the other option is not jumping and that’s just not a realistic option for us! *wink* Here are our best tips on what to wear while skydiving in the winter or cooler months:
- Layering is Key
When deciding what to wear for winter skydiving, start with a warm base layer – like long johns – then add a couple of insulating layers on top. Make sure your clothing is able to retain warmth without restricting movement too much. Finish it off with a windproof and snug-fitting outer layer, and you’re golden!
- Gloves
Choose windproof gloves to protect your hands from the cold without hindering too much dexterity. Another trick that skydivers use that you can do is wear latex gloves underneath your normal gloves for an added wind barrier. Science!
- Wool Socks
Insulated, high socks paired with wind-resistant shoes are a sure way to ensure your piggies stay warm and cozy.
- Neck Buff
A neck buff – or neck gaiter – helps protect your face and neck from the bite of 120 mph freezing cold winds.
- Goggles
You will be provided goggles to shield your eyes from the wind. You’ll want to make sure they are snug to your face to prevent any fogging up – don’t miss out on this view! If you need help fitting them to your face, ask your instructor to help you put them on correctly.
- Heated Base Layers
If you’re feeling extra fancy, you can purchase a heated base layer. Yes, you heard that right. There are shirts that have heating pads installed inside them to keep you nice and snug. If you’re looking for extra warmth without investing too much, hand warmers are a great option, too – and you don’t just have to use them for your hands …
2. Know What to Expect
Skydiving during winter comes with unique considerations that you’ll want to be sure you are prepared for before embarking on your chilly journey. Be prepared for temperatures to drop 30 to 40 degrees as you approach altitude. This means if it’s 40 degrees on the ground, it could be 10 degrees at your exit altitude of 10,000 feet.
Not to mention, colder temperatures means sharper winds during the freefall, which can feel more intense as compared to summer jumps. Weather conditions, including wind speeds and temperatures, are closely monitored by our dropzone team and a judgement call may be made even moments before you board the plane. Safety first, always.
3. Keep Warm Before & After the Jump
The good news is, skydiving itself is a pretty intense workout, so you’ll most likely warm up fast once you’re in the air and your adrenaline starts pumping. The trick is staying warm before and after your jump. Bring extra layers, like a cozy jacket or blanket, to wear before you gear up for your jump. Once your jump is complete, you’ll appreciate having these layers handy to warm up again when your heart rate returns to normal!
A thermos of hot cocoa or coffee can also make a big difference in keeping your body warm from the inside out. After your jump, plan to spend some time indoors, whether it is relaxing in the hangar or celebrating your skydive at one of the nearby restaurants in the Sullivan area.
It’s never too early to start planning and preparing for your adventure. Book your jump for the upcoming season at Skydive STL. Blue skies!
