The Best Time of Year to Go Skydiving
Monday, March 1, 2021
When squaring up to the idea of going skydiving for the first time, your brain will likely be brimming over with questions:
The more specific things come a little later (and you can research more on our blog), but for now, let us investigate some of the items closer to the top of the list? In which months can you do a skydive? What indeed is the best time of year to go skydiving?
Of Course, Location Matters:
Answering these questions depends on where you are. While there are skydiving operations in hot places that jump all year round, the majority are seasonal – closing up for the coldest part of the year. Here at Skydive STL, we open up in late March, which is still early in the year but allows for the chilliest Midwest months to pass. While it is possible to jump in winter, the shivery practicalities of doing so make it a more agreeable plan to get going when things brighten up a bit. Here in St. Louis, March feels like the right time for everyone.
Different Seasons Offer Different Experiences:
Skydiving is an outdoor thing – so of course, Summer is when we are most busy. Don’t overlook the Spring and Fall months though! They offer some very strong qualities to recommend them for skydiving – and for many people even represent the very best time jump…
Spring Is Often Less Busy:
In the Spring there can be fewer on the dropzone. A good skydiving operation schedules everything meticulously, but at peak times that can still mean some waiting around. Skydiving at a quieter time can not only mean you don’t have to wait for the plane or all the other people, but the smaller numbers add to the vibe. We are always happy to answer any questions you have about our unique and amazing sport, but quieter times are best for an experience with more depth and detail.
The Beautiful Scenery of Fall Can’t Be Matched:
Skydiving is a beautiful experience whenever you do it, and each season has its own qualities to recommend. The early part of the year–with cool, clean air and lush new greenery–can be particularly wonderful to see from the sky. The Summer presents long, hot days that allow for as many jumps as possible. Fall starts once again to cool off, and offers some of the best sunrises and sunsets to make your memories extra special.
Spring & Fall May Offer More Agreeable Temperatures:
It gets cooler as you go up in the plane, which during the high Summer can be a brief and very welcome respite from roasting on the ground. Away from the hottest months it can be an agreeable situation to be less toasty on the ground, and get suitably kitted up with layers and gloves, etc. for when it is cold at jumping altitude. The goal is to jump out of the plane pretty much as soon as you get up there, so the fact it might be cold at the top does not matter – you are not staying. A little chill in the air even adds to the exhilaration that you only feel in good ways.
What is the Best Time of Year to Go Skydiving? The Verdict:
The best time to go skydiving is as soon as you can!
As early in the year as possible is great for some of the reasons above, but if you happened to get hooked (highly likely), it is the perfect time to dive right in and become a skydiver yourself. We want as many people as possible to experience skydiving and while the flat-out Summer days are an exciting time on the dropzone, there is a lot to be said for the rest of the season when we have the luxury of time to hang out some more and show you what skydiving is all about. Get involved!
